English Language Day

Olá! Hoje é o Dia da Língua Inglesa!
English is a West Germanic language that has its roots in England and nowadays it’s spoken for as many as 1.75 billion people around the world, i.e. about 1 in 4 people on Earth.
A curious fact is that around 45% of all English words have French roots due to the historical influence of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Words like “jury,” “parliament,” and “war,” which are connected to legislation, governments, and the armed forces, came from French and were adopted into the English language.
But why did they choose this day?
It’s thought that’s the Shakespeare’s birthday and anniversary of his death and he is considered as the greatest writer in English language and one of the most important figures among all the authors in world literature.
Thus, April 23 was chosen by the United Nations to celebrate and promote multilingualism, cultural diversity and to encourage people to learn this language and improve their personal and professional opportunities.
Shakespeare also has coined some new words and idioms in English such as
- “eyeball”
- “bedazzled”
- “bump”
- “critic”
- “fashionable”
- “gloomy”
- “gossip”
- “hurry”
- “majestic”
- “swagger”
- “uncomfortable”
And idioms like these:
• “Break the ice” refers to starting a conversation with someone you don’t know very well in order to ease tension or discomfort in a social setting.
• “Brevity is the soul of wit” is a phrase from Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” that refers to the need of being succinct and to the point in order to be funny and intelligent. In other words, it is preferable to be succinct and witty rather than drawn-out and boring.
• The phrase “heart of gold” describes someone who is kind, kind, and generous. It implies that this individual is kind and loving and that they have only positive things in their heart.

O inglês é um idioma germânico ocidental que tem suas raízes na Inglaterra e hoje é falado por cerca de 1,75 bilhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, ou seja, cerca de 1 em cada 4 pessoas na Terra.
Um fato curioso é que cerca de 45% de todas as palavras inglesas têm raízes francesas, devido à influência histórica da Conquista Normanda da Inglaterra em 1066. Palavras como “júri”, “parlamento” e “guerra”, que estão ligadas à legislação, governos e forças armadas, vieram do francês e foram adotadas no idioma inglês.
Mas por que eles escolheram este dia?
Pensa-se que é o aniversário e aniversário de sua morte de Shakespeare e ele é considerado o maior escritor em língua inglesa e uma das figuras mais importantes entre todos os autores da literatura mundial.
Assim, o dia 23 de abril foi escolhido pelas Nações Unidas para celebrar e promover o multilingüismo, a diversidade cultural e incentivar as pessoas a aprender esta língua e melhorar suas oportunidades pessoais e profissionais.
Shakespeare também cunhou algumas novas palavras e expressões idiomáticas em inglês, tais como
- eyeball – globo ocular
- bedazzled – deslumbrado(a)
- bump – solavanco, colisão
- critic – crítico(a)
- fashionable – fashionável, elegante, na moda
- gloomy – sombrio(a), melancólico(a)
- Gossip – fofoca
- hurry – pressa, urgência
- majestic – majestoso(a), imponente
- swagger – gingado, balanço, ostentação
- uncomfortable – desconfortável, incômodo(a)
E expressões idiomáticas :
– Break the ice – “Quebrar o gelo” – refere-se a iniciar uma conversa com alguém que você não conhece muito bem, a fim de aliviar a tensão ou o desconforto em um ambiente social.
– Brevity is the soul of wit – “A brevidade é a alma da inteligência” – é uma frase da peça “Hamlet” de Shakespeare que se refere à necessidade de ser sucinto e ao ponto para ser engraçado e inteligente. Em outras palavras, é preferível ser sucinto e espirituoso em vez de extravagante e enfadonho.
– Heart of gold – “coração de ouro” – descreve alguém que é gentil, gentil e generoso. Implica que este indivíduo é bondoso e amoroso e que só tem coisas positivas em seu coração.
