Politeness

Hey guys!

In any language there is always a slightly more polite or less direct way of saying something. And in English it is no different.

Olá pessoal!

Em qualquer idioma sempre existe uma maneira um pouco mais educada ou menos direta se falar alguma coisa. E no inglês não é diferente.

• You are wrong. Você está errado.
• I think you are mistaken. Penso que está enganado.

• Send me the report. Envie o relatório.
• Could you send me the report? Poderia enviar-me o relatório?

• Tell me when you are available. Avise quando estiver disponível.
• Let me know when you are available. When possible, let me know when it’s available.

• Leve me alone. Deixe-me sozinho!
• Could you give me a minute? Poderia dar-me um minuto?

• Your work is not good. O seu trabalho não está bom.
• I’m not satisfied with your work. Não estou satisfeito com o seu trabalho.

• Give me that! Me de isto!
• Could you please give me that, if it’s not too much trouble? Poderia dar-me isso, se não for muito incômodo/problema?

• Stop talking so loud! Pare de falar tão alto!
• Excuse me, would you mind speaking a little more quietly? Desculpe-me, importa-se de falar um pouco mais baixo?

• I don’t have time for this. Não tenho tempo para isto.
• I’m sorry, but I’m quite busy at the moment. Perhaps we could discuss this later? Lamento, mas estou bastante ocupado neste momento. Talvez pudéssemos discutir isto mais tarde?

• That’s not my problem. Isso não é problema meu.
• I understand your concern, but unfortunately I am not able to help with that particular issue. Entendo sua preocupação, mas infelizmente não posso ajudar com esse problema específico.

• What’s your name? Qual é o seu nome?
• Excuse me, may I ask what your name is? Desculpe, posso perguntar qual é o seu nome?
